The Starlings Institute — Advancing Human-Centered Systems

Research agenda

Research

The Institute studies how conditions, institutional structures, and environments shape human outcomes. Its work connects systems thinking and observation to tools that help institutions diagnose instability.

What the Institute studies

The research examines how conditions influence behavior, how institutions coordinate their work, and how patterns of stability or fragmentation develop over time.

Human Systems Architecture

Kevin A. Starlings originated the Institute’s Human Systems Architecture methodology. The methodology examines relationships among the conditions people encounter, the institutions responsible for those conditions, and the outcomes that follow.

How research becomes usable

The Institute uses observation, applied analysis, and structured modeling to develop frameworks, measurement tools, and diagnostic models. Educational Architecture and Youth System Stability Architecture illustrate how the approach is applied in different settings.
